As a former Dale Carnegie instructor, personal development trainer, and international tour director, Nakamoto knows how to tell a story. A Psycho’s Guide to Dating Women $15.98 A Psycho’s Guide(tm) to Dating Women is written satirically by John Megara in the same style as the Dummies and Complete Idiot’s guidebooks, however instead of giving advice to stupid people, it is directed at lunatics. With chapter headings such as Work Out Five Hours a Day, Change Your Name to Constance, and Lie Your Face Off, Megara’s dark comedy contains a blistering attack on the shallowness of modern romance. He also challenges feminist theory throughout the book, criticizing it for ignoring the plight of men working in dangerous professions and for disregarding male victims of physical violence. The book’s unnamed narrator (a twenty-five-year-old, self-described psychopath who tattoos the number of women he has slept with on his back) is so determined to avoid the psychological perils of dating that he follows superficial courting rules that govern nearly his entire existence. His main theory of dating is that there are two kinds of men in the world, the good-looking ones who women universally adore and the ugly ones who women treat with latent hostility. As a member of the second group, the narrator seems inclined to respond in kind, reveling in his own misery as he pursues women and vanquishes competitors with ruthless intelligence. However, when the narrator struggles with the morality of his actions and confronts his own appearance-obsessed neurosis, one questions whether he is truly evil. Perhaps he has simply been broken by a courting system that no longer functions according to its original purpose. |
